In each edition of the Library newsletter, we list opprotunities for teen volunteers to earn community service credit. Each program will give different amounts of credit earned.
Community Service Certificates
As of July 1, Ms. Melissa, the new Young Adult Librarian, will be coordinating all Community Service events and creating the certificates for the hours earned. We are looking forward to all of the wonderful things to come.
*If you have participated in any tween and teen community service programs, your community service certificate is waiting for you in the Family Center. Please stop in to pick it up.*
In-person Opportunities (Grades 5 - 12):
September is Library Card Sign Up Month - A Library Card Hits all the Right Notes
September 1 - September 30
The Family Center would like to give teens the opportunity to show off their digital library cards! Digital library cards can help tweens and teens with so many things at the library, so it’s important to have one on your phone. Don’t have a library card? Sign up for one at our Circulation Department and then come into the Family Center and we will help you set up your digital card. You will earn 1 hour of community service for the month of September. You will also be entered into our raffle. One winner will be chosen.
T.A.G. - TEEN ADVISORY GROUP
T.A.G. you’re it! Ever wanted to have a say in your Y.A. library? Join the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library’s Teen Advisory Group. Meeting once a month, the Teen Advisory Group will discuss upcoming possible programs, events, and other ideas for the future. Participants will receive 1 hour community service credit.

Breast Cancer Community Service Bags

October is breast cancer awareness month; join Theresa as we decorate bags to donate to breast cancer patients to help brighten their days! Each participant will be rewarded 2 hours of community service for attending this program.
Continuous Opportunities (Grades 5 - 12):
- Bookmark It! - Color and create bookmarks that will be displayed and given out to children who visit the Family Center. All participants are asked to pick up a craft kit containing three bookmark templates. Markers, crayons, or colored pencils will be needed for this program. All completed bookmarks should be returned to Family Center. Each participant will earn two hours of community service credit.
- Cards for Hospitalized Kids - Create cards for children and teens receiving treatment in hospitals. Each card will earn the participant 1 hour of community service credit, with a maximum of 5 hours per month.
- Color a Smile - Put a smile on someone's face with a colorful drawing. Each drawing will earn the participant 1 hour of community service credit, with a maximum of 5 hours per month.
- Helping Hands - Travel Size Toiletries for the INN - Assist the guests of the Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN) in Hempstead through our travel size toiletry program. Bring in a minimum of 3, new and unopened travel size personal hygiene products in a Ziploc style plastic bag, and earn 1 hour of community service credit.
- Recycling Rocks -Turn cans and bottles into community service hours by returning deposit bottles to a local supermarket. Return the cans and bottles and then email a photo of the bottle return receipt to familycenter@poblib.org. Participants will earn 1 hour of community service credit for every 20 cans and bottles that are returned, up to 2 hours per month.
